Why are Greyhounds the Best Companion Dogs?

Greyhounds spend their life in the company of other greyhounds, and there are very few times when they are in the company of different breeds of dogs. Initially, when the greyhounds are exposed to a wide array of shapes, sizes, fluffy coats, flat faces and play styles, the greyhounds are not sure how to interact. Thus, when you adopt them, they might take some time to be the best companion dog.

There are some hounds that are playful, while others are over-excited and not sure what to do. Some of the greyhounds are scared and would instead want to be left alone. You shall notice that when you meet other greyhounds, your pet greyhound will light up because they recognize “one of their kind”.

Just like people, companion dogs are individuals. While some dogs like to have fun and hang out with every dog they meet, other dogs are “library dogs” and would instead only catch up with a few buddies or hang out with their people. It is crucial to recognize because even though you enjoy socializing at the dog park, your pet greyhound might prefer to be elsewhere! Since they have lived with their own kind, most greyhounds are “library dogs”.

A Note on the Prey Drive

Greyhounds are sighthounds, and they are historically bred as hunting companions. More recently, they are bred for racing. The most crucial factor about greyhounds is they are selectively bred to sight and chase their prey. Therefore, it takes time for any greyhound to build a relationship with other dogs, especially when two different breeds live together. Here are two crucial factors to make your pet greyhound a companion dog.

1. Be Present

Don’t rush to be best friends right away. Relationships take time to develop, just like with human beings. Make sure that both dogs are comfortable.

2. Manage the Resources

Make sure to feed the dogs separately. These include edible chews or filled kong toys, and it is best to keep the toys out of sight. Make sure the dogs have their own spaces.
